WEDDING VEILS

The choice to wear a wedding veil, is personal. Some brides have always dreamed of the full traditional head-to-toe bridal look, or may have an heirloom veil handed down through their generations. Other brides, prefer no veil to keep their look cleaner and simpler – plus, it gives their dress the chance to steal the show.

No. Whilst a bridal veil is considered for many, as a tradition, there is no requirement to wear a wedding veil when you get married. Wearing a veil is only dependent on your personal choice. More traditional weddings and ceremonies tend to attract the desire for a wedding veil, but still many brides opt out of wearing one if they are looking for a more simplified look. Less formal weddings, like on a beach, garden, or destination locations may be easier without a veil because of travel and the outdoors elements.  simpler wedding dress would suit these occasions like our Madi Lane Lissy wedding dress, or Leo wedding dress.

Like any trends, popularity comes and goes. Veils however are somewhat timeless and iconic, so it tends to be less about popularity, and more about personal choice. There are less expectations for modern brides to wear veils these daysversus the more conservative/traditional times in the past.

Let’s face it, a wedding veil won’t go out of style – in fact, heirloom veils passed down through generational families hold deep meaning, and vintage style is very much revered today. But we do see trends in veils, just like we do wedding dresses:

  • Glamour and drama is in. There’s nothing quite like an extra-long veil with statement details to make a stunning bridal entrance like our Madi Lane Sterling Veil.  That walk down the aisle will be in full effect with a Cathedral length veil like our Noble Veil  – she is romantic, glamorous, and very fashionable.
  • Barely-there. If glamour is not your style, but you love the look of a veil, many brides opt for minimalist tulle like our Madi Lane Navy Veil. Whisper light with a raw edge gives a light airy effect, which is youthful and fresh.
  • Matching motifs. To achieve a full cohesive look, matching the veil to the dress with the same lace touches, or 3D motifs is definitely for brides who love the details. Whether it’s a particular lace like our Madi Lane Wimmer Veil, beading, or 3D appliques like our Nettle Veil, a matching veil can offer the full bridal look from head to toe.
  • Short and cute. Some brides are looking for a nod to a veil, but want a more modern take (that’s not as cumbersome), so we are seeing lots of shorter length veils (Elbow length) or a tulle bows (Fingertip length) appearing like our Madi Lane Nobu Veil or Waverley Veil.

Nothing beats trying on different wedding veil options with your wedding dress. The in-store stylist will be able to recommend styles which complement the dress design. It is important that the veil doesn’t overshadow or compete with your wedding dress – you are looking for a harmonious overall look. Here’s some tips:

  • Match the colour. Generally wedding veils will come in white or ivory, but as we all know – whites can look the same when separate, but when put together you see the difference. Avoid purchasing a veil that you can’t physically see next to your dress fabric, first. Under natural lighting is also the gold standard to check.
  • Silhouette and length. It’s important that your veil sits nicely with your dress, and doesn’t have an awkward length. For A-line dresses, check that the length touches your body around the widest part of your skirt. The standard-length train is good for voluminous ballgowns or fitted silhouettes. Formal weddings suit cathedral length veils.
  • Movement and venue – Avoid long and heavy veils at the beach or in a garden setting. The wind will catch the veil, or sand/dirt will collect in a long veil. Short veils, or a lighter-weight will help with travel and ease of movement. If going formal – get maximum value from that long aisle with a long flowing veil.
